Can't write data to a floppy disk

I have an upgraded Pentium system running Windows 98. Whenever I try to write to the floppy disk, it complains that the disk is write-protected. I check, it isn't and I try again, which still results in the error message. It's able to read from the disks without any problems. I have uninstalled the floppy drive using Device Manager, checked that the ribbon cable is firmly in place at both ends and changed the drive - all without success. The only thing I haven't been able to do is change the ribbon connector. Are there any other possible causes or, more importantly, cures?

We assume that you haven't changed the floppy disk controller (on the motherboard) either. However, before you fork out for a new motherboard, there are a few more things you can try. Check whether you can write to a disk using real-mode MS-DOS. This would show whether or not the problem is being caused by a Windows software conflict. If MS-DOS is okay, see if you can write to a floppy when Windows is running in Safe Mode. If so, this would suggest a conflict with something like an antivirus program.

Boot sector viruses can interfere with disk operation, so check your system for viruses using an up-to-date virus scanner. It would also be worth checking that the floppy drive settings in your Bios are correct. It's unlikely that they won't be, but you never know.
